VPN remote access

Working from home is the new reality under the threat of COVID-19. While large enterprises have had remote access capabilities for years, most small businesses haven’t addressed this need. Given that 34% of Americans work at a small business, it’s likely that millions of Americans aren’t able to work remotely. If you’re a small business owner in New York City, MacMaven Consulting can help.

There are many options to provide your staff with remote access to their office Macs. There are well-known subscription services for logging into remote computers. I prefer using a router with a VPN capability. An office VPN router avoids subscription fees and provides tremendous flexibility. Once an employees are connected to the VPN, they can access any server in the office (e.g., FileMaker or file sharing) and also their own Mac desktop.

MacMaven installs and supports a brand-new device, the UniFi Dream Machine Pro by Ubiquiti Networks. The UDM Pro is, at its core, a router. It also provides:
• VPN (L2TP over IPSec)
• Firewall
• Intrusion detection and prevention
• Web filtering
