I’ve noticed that people who grew up with typewriters tend to send email messages without spacing between paragraphs. This makes emails difficult to read because it’s not clear when one paragraph ends and the next begins.
Formatting email messages with a clean, professional look is very simple:
- One space should be used after each sentence.
- The return key should be pressed at the end of a paragraph, never in the middle of paragraphs.
- Pressing return a second time will insert a blank line between paragraphs. Vertical space between paragraphs is needed for clarity because, unlike the typewriter convention, paragraphs aren’t indented.
